HOST FOR SWINE INFLUENZA VIRUS I. THE Pm~SENC~. OF SWINE I_t~LU~.lqZA VIRUS IN I-IsALTH'g AND SUSCEPTIBLE PIGS

چکیده
In this series of papers data will be presented which demonstrate the fact that the swine lungworm serves under natural conditions as a reservoir and intermediate host for the swine influenza virus. The virus can persist in a masked form within its worm host for long periods of time, and months or even years may elapse between its transmission from one swine to the next. The period during which the virus survives in the lungworm is more than adequate to account for its persistence between epizootics of swine influenza. In this first paper facts will be presented which show that healthy susceptible pigs sometimes contain the swine influenza virus and may undergo attacks of influenza if the virus is provoked to activity by multiple intramuscular injections of the bacterium Hemophilus influenza* suis (1). Of the two agents which act in concert to cause swine influenza (1), it has been shown that the bacterial component, H. influenza, suis, is capable of eliciting an immune response that affords only partial protection against the disease (2). Swine influenza virus vaccines, on the other hand, confer a complete immunity to swine influenza (3). The observations now to be recorded were made as a result of further study of the use of H. influenza, suis vaccines in the prophylaxis of swine influenza.

Immunization Experiments with Swine Influenza
In earlier experiments (1) it was shown tha t swine influenza virus, administered intramuscularly, immunized pigs to swine influenza and achieved this result without inducing evidence of iv_fection. I t was pointed out t ha t this method of immunization might be of practical value. The discovery by Smith, Andrewes, and Laidlaw tha t ferrets (2) and mice (3) are also susceptible to swine influen...

BACKGROUND Swine influenza virus (SIV) is the cause of an acute respiratory disease that affects swine worldwide. In Brazil, SIV has been identified in pigs since 1978. After the emergence of pandemic H1N1 in 2009 (H1N1pdm09), few studies reported the presence of influenza virus in Brazilian herds. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate the serological profile for influenza vi...
متن کاملA Newly Emerged Swine-Origin Influenza A(H3N2) Variant Dampens Host Antiviral Immunity but Induces Potent Inflammasome Activation.
We compared the innate immune response to a newly emerged swine-origin influenza A(H3N2) variant containing the M gene from 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1), termed "A(H3N2)vpM," to the immune responses to the 2010 swine-origin influenza A(H3N2) variant and seasonal influenza A(H3N2). Our results demonstrated that A(H3N2)vpM-induced myeloid dendritic cells secreted significantly lower levels of ...
متن کاملThe epidemiology and evolution of influenza viruses in pigs.
Pigs serve as major reservoirs of H1N1 and H3N2 influenza viruses which are endemic in pig populations world-wide and are responsible for one of the most prevalent respiratory diseases in pigs. The maintenance of these viruses in pigs and the frequent exchange of viruses between pigs and other species is facilitated directly by swine husbandry practices, which provide for a continual supply of ...

Swine Influenza Inspired Optimization (SIIO) is a search algorithm proposed for optimal solution. The authors followed the SIR (susceptible infectious-recovered) virus spread model of Swine Influenza to develop the new evolutionary algorithm named as SIIO. SIR model is used to frame optimization algorithm following the spread and control phenomenon of the swine flu virus in the human population...
